The aim of the project is to study the impact and effectiveness of KEEPCOOL ethylene filters for storing oranges.
The study consists in measuring various parameters that are indicative of ripening and ageing in oranges with and without the system to delay it while stored at 6-8º C.
All the tests were carried out in a cold-storage unit at 6-8º C, storing 3 crates of oranges weighing approximately 5-6 kg per crate. The weight of the fruit was analysed at the beginning and after 7, 14 and 21 days. The tests were done with a KEEPCOOL filter placed in the centre of the cold-storage room near the ventilator.
The following materials and teams were used to do the tasks:
Oranges: Valencia Late variety
Filter: As a system to delay ripening and ageing, we used the KEEPCOOL range, installed in an M-CAM 1000 machine with a germicide system.
Cold storage: The 896-m3 cold-storage room is equipped with a program that controls temperature, humidity and lighting. For the test, the produce was stored at 6-8º C without humidity control.

Comparison day 1 orange without filter (control) and with KEEPCOOL ethylene filter

Comparison day 33 orange without filter (control) and with KEEPCOOL ethylene filter
-
25,6% less weight-loss
Weight-loss is less pronounced in oranges stored with KEEPCOOL (3.2%) than those stored without our filter (5.84%) over 7 days.
-
Better product texture
The loss of texture in the samples is less pronounced in those stored with KEEPCOOL.
-
No rotting
The oranges stored with our KEEPCOOL filter show no signs of mould, while the ones stored without did.
